On August 11, 2022, Chargé d’affaires Cheng Weihua took a live interview with Ulusal Kanal’s “Gün Ortası” on the Taiwan question. He focused on the introduction of the white paper titled “The Taiwan Question and China’s Reunification in the New Era”, elaborated on China’s solemn position on Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan and the countermeasures that have been taken. He also answered questions from the host.

Cheng Weihua said that the white paper expounds on the stance and policies of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Chinese government to promote the realization of reunification of motherland in the new era and demonstrates the firm will and strong determination of the CPC and the Chinese people to pursue reunification. The white paper will help the international community to accurately understand the history and jurisprudence of the Taiwan question and the position of the Chinese government. Peaceful cross-Straits reunification is of benefit not only to the Chinese nation, but to all peoples and the international community as a whole. It is hoped that the international community and all countries that have established diplomatic relations with China will adhere to the one-China principle, properly handle Taiwan-related issues, and understand and support the Chinese people’s just cause of opposing “Taiwan independence” and realizing the reunification of the motherland.

Cheng Weihua pointed out that Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan was a major political provocation, which upgraded relations between the United States and Taiwan to a substantive level. This move seriously infringes upon China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. It is a serious violation of the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiqués. It has a severe impact on the political foundation of China-U.S. relations. It gravely undermines peace and stability across the straits, and seriously tramples on the basic norms governing international relations. China’s comprehensive measures are necessary and timely defensive countermeasures. Carefully considered and evaluated, they are aimed at safeguarding national sovereignty and security and are in line with international and domestic laws. They are a warning to the provocateurs and also aimed at protecting regional stability and peace in the Taiwan Strait. China and Türkiye are friendly countries. The two countries firmly support each other’s efforts to safeguard national sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity. The Turkish government has long adhered to the one-China principle, which China highly appreciates. It is hoped that China and Türkiye will continue to understand and support each other on issues concerning each other’s core interests, so as to promote sound and stable development of the strategic cooperative relations between the two countries.
